I received a jury summons, what next?

Be sure to complete Part “H” on the back of your summons and bring your entire summons to court.

Any questions or excuses can be directed to the Broome County Commissioner of Jurors. Please refer to your summons or visit their website.

I received a Traffic Ticket in the Town of Chenango, what do I do?

If you are charged with one or more Traffic Infractions, you have the option to plead by mail. Follow the instructions on your Uniform Traffic Ticket to enter your plea of either Guilty or Not Guilty and return your ticket to the court by mail or you can drop it off at the court office.
If you have received a Traffic Ticket for a Misdemeanor or Felony Charge, your personal appearance is required by law in the State of New York.

I missed my court appearance, what do I do?

You should contact the court or your attorney immediately.

I’d like to speak with someone regarding a reduction or plea bargain.

All plea bargaining is done with the Broome County District Attorney’s Office. Upon entering a plea of Not Guilty, you will receive a date and time to conference your case in court with the Assistant District Attorney in regards to an offer or reduction.  To request an offer or reduction online, please visit the prosecutor’s website  at https://broomeda.com/tickets.html or call their office at (607)778-2373.

I have a question regarding the Traffic Diversion Program.

Who do I contact about points on my license and/or my Driver Abstract?

All questions regarding points and/or license status must be directed to the New York State Department of
Motor Vehicles. You can contact the NYS DMV at your local office or go to http://www.dmv.ny.gov 

Can I get a Public Defender?

Call the Broome County Public Defender’s Office at 607-778-2403 for questions or to make an appointment for a qualifying interview. You will have to financially qualify for representation.

What do I do if I receive a Suspension Notice from the NYS DMV?

Contact the court to determine the action needed to stop or clear your pending license suspension.

Small Claims Court

How do I file a small claims case?

  • The party you are filing against must live, work or have a place of business in the Town of Chenango. They must receive their mail in the Town of Chenango. You must have the exact mailing address- Post office boxes are not acceptable.
  • For claims up to $1000.00, the filing fee is $10.00.
  • For claims over $1000.00 up to $3000.00 the filing fee is $15.00.
  • You must call ahead to make an appointment to file the paperwork.
