Function: To receive the town and county property taxes for the residents of the Town of Chenango.

Tax FAQ’s

Q. When will I receive my tax bill, and when is it due?

A. Your Town & County bill will be mailed by December 30 and is due without penalty by January 31st.

February payments have a 1% penalty and March payments have a 2% penalty plus $1.00 for the second notice fee.

Q. Can I pay my tax notice by credit card?

A. Yes, you can pay your tax notice by credit card online only. Please click on the taxlookup.net link. Find your tax notice by using your tax map # or street location. Look for the “make payment” button and click on that. You will be redirected to another site to make credit card payments.

Q. What is the second notice fee?

A. Taxpayers who have not paid their taxes by March 1st will receive a second notice and a $1.00 plus the 2% penalty is added to the tax bill.

Q. Where do I pay my taxes and who do I make the check payable to?

A. Taxes can be paid in person at the Tax office located at 1529 NYS Rte. 12, Binghamton, NY 13901. Taxes can also be mailed to the Tax office at the above location. Note – please make sure the envelop is postmarked by the Post Office by the deadline date (NYS RPTL 925)and properly addressed to the appropriate collecting officer. Do not send cash through the mail.

Checks can be payable to – Town of Chenango Tax Collector or Nancy Schnurbusch, Tax Collector.

Q. Do I have to pay a penalty if I didn’t receive a tax bill?

A. Yes, the failure to mail a statement or the failure of the property owner to receive a statement will not affect the validity of the taxes or interest prescribed by law (NYS RPTL 922). In addition, neither the Tax Collector nor any other official has the legal authority to waive statutory penalty charges. So if you have not received your tax notice please contact the Tax Collector.

Q. Where do I pay delinquent (unpaid) taxes?

A. Delinquent payments can be made at Broome County Office of Management & Budget located at 60 Hawley St., P.O. Box 1766, Binghamton, NY, 13902-(607)778-2161. Please call them before you pay your delinquent tax.

Q. What is Third Party Notification?

A. Property owners who are disabled or 65 years of age or older, and own a one, two or three family home may designate an adult consenting third part to receive duplicate copies of tax bills and notices of unpaid taxes. In order to receive this service, one must fill out a third party notification form RP-923.

Q. Where do I pay the school tax?

A. There are four school districts in the Town of Chenango. You will need to contact the school district to find out where to pay.

Q. Do you accept partial payments?

A. Yes. Partial payments may be made on your taxes. The first payment MUST be paid during the month of January (non-penalty period) and must be at least 50% of the total tax. The unpaid portion can be paid either the month of February or March with the appropriate penalties. The tax bill will be receipted when the total tax is paid in full.

Q. How do I receive a receipt?

A. If you are paying your tax please mail the ENTIRE tax notice then you will receive a receipt. If your bank/escrow holder pays your tax you will automatically receive a receipt.


New homeowners – Please contact us as soon as possible, so we can correct our information. If you do not contact us, the bill for your property will not go where it needs to be and payment can be late and penalized.

Many homeowners have their property taxes paid from an escrow account through their mortgage company. You and/or your lender are not exempt from the various penalties, fees and proceedings that become relevant if an error results in the late or non-payment of your property taxes.

Homeowners who pay off their mortgage or are no longer escrowed for taxes are encouraged to contact the Tax Office so that we may send all future tax bills directly to you as the homeowner.

Homeowners who have moved are encouraged to contact the Tax Office so that we may send the taxes to the current address in a timely manner.

For those of you who pay your bills online please note. The company cuts the check payable to Tax Collector and mails it to the tax office (snail mail). There is no direct deposit of these payments. The payment is mailed and seldom gets a U S Postal Service postmark, which is used as the date of receipt (RPTL 925). Therefore, the date we receive the envelop is considered the postmark. You may need to contact your bank & verify their policy and time structure for such payments.
