All-Hazard Mitigation Plan for the County

Broome County is undergoing an update of the All-Hazard Mitigation Plan for the County and its municipalities.  The goal of the plan is to lessen the impact of disasters in our community and ensure the County and its municipalities remain eligible to apply for and receive federal grant funding for mitigation projects. The study will focus on existing buildings & potential future development, infrastructure, and critical facilities that might be impacted.  Critical facilities include but are not limited to municipal buildings and infrastructure such as power-generation facilities, water utilities, roadways, railroads and communication systems.

As part of this process we are conducting surveys to receive feedback about local disaster issues and gather information about areas vulnerable to disaster. The information provided through the survey will help us coordinate activities to reduce the risk of future injury or property damages during hazard events, such as floods, severe storms, winter storms, and others.

We are looking for feedback from stakeholders that hold special knowledge or expertise of hazard impacts in the community. If you are associated with any of the following organizations, please click the link next to the organization and complete the survey as well. We would appreciate if you would share these surveys with any appropriate email distributions lists to which they may apply.  We ask that you provide responses to the surveys by September 10th so your responses can be integrated into our analysis.

We are also conducting a citizen survey to obtain input and judge citizen preparedness for natural hazard events. We would appreciate if you could help us share this via email or social media as appropriate. The survey can be found here:

More information can be found in the attached fact sheet and on the project website (   There you will also find notices for public meetings when scheduled and draft sections of the plan as they become available. Sections of the plan will be available for download and review at the Broome County Department of Planning and Economic Development website.
